Marx says that the medieval relations are what they appear to be–they are more direct personal relations and appear as such. Another way to put this is not that the peasant’s worldview is pre-symbolic, that’s never true of any society and Marx would agree. It means that the peasant’s relationship to things and to other people is not mediated by “value” or not mediated by capitalist labor time.
